Artist Statement
I’m pretty sure that I’ve always had an interest in art starting at an early age. In most early childhood educational programs, art is like a typical daily activity. At this stage, art is brought into play allowing young children to express their creativity and perception of things they see daily usually by way of drawing. At the age of 4, I most likely had no idea what art really was or that it could impact my life in a major way. Since primary school, my interest in art has grown more and more throughout the years.
A major reason I create art is to make my feelings or thoughts into something tangible. Being more of a thinker than a speaker, art is a great way for others to take a visual trip into my inner thoughts. An example of these ideas might reflect my mood or it could be an ode to one of my favorite musical artists at the moment. Things that inspire me to make art are singers, musicians, song lyrics and visual artists. I am basically inspired by creative people in general, ranging from the artistically inclined to skateboarders to poets. Overall I am inspired by people that are comfortable with being themselves and encourage others to do the same: Hayley Williams, Tyler Okonma, Scott Mescudi, and recently a lyricist out of Atlanta that goes by the name Raury. My favorite visually artistic artist and inspiration is currently Jamie Hewlett.
My medium of choice is usually premier colored pencils by PrismaColor. I like using this medium because it allows me to apply multiple layers while providing vibrant colors. The disadvantage of using colored pencils is that they are not very time efficient compared to wet mediums like paints or inks. Since August 2013, I have begun dabbling with oil painting.
